All sections of Goyang-daero, Jungang-ro and Hwajong-ro now covered
Goyang Special City announced Tuesday it will add 112 locations to its real-time traffic signal information service, expanding coverage to Goyang-daero and Jungang-ro — two of the city's busiest commuter corridors — as well as Hwajong-ro, which already operates an AI-based real-time traffic signal system.
The service links traffic signal data managed by local governments and the Korean National Police Agency with commercial navigation apps, giving drivers real-time updates on remaining signal time and upcoming light changes at intersections ahead. It is currently available through Naver Map's navigation service, with plans to extend coverage to additional roads in phases.
Goyang-daero and Jungang-ro are among the city's most congested roads during rush hours. The city first rolled out the service in January along 29 intersections on Jungang-ro, between Deogeun Bridge junction and Daegok Station.
With the addition of 112 locations, the service now covers a total of 141 traffic signals across the full lengths of Goyang-daero, Jungang-ro and Hwajong-ro.
The service allows drivers approaching intersections to anticipate wait times in advance, reducing unnecessary hard acceleration and braking. City officials said it is also expected to help prevent rear-end collisions caused by gridlock and sudden stops at intersections. The service is expected to contribute particularly to safer operation of buses and large vehicles, which require longer distances to accelerate and decelerate.
"We expect residents who have long suffered through congestion on their daily commutes to be able to drive more safely and predictably," a city official said. "Given its effectiveness in easing traffic and preventing accidents, we will continue rolling out advanced smart traffic services on major roads without interruption."
