Yeongdeungpo-gu is launching an industrial accident insurance premium support project for platform delivery workers, who face elevated risks of on-the-job injuries.
Delivery workers are directly exposed to extreme weather — including heat waves and cold snaps — and face a high risk of traffic accidents and other workplace injuries.
The insurance burden they carry is particularly notable. While employers at general workplaces cover the full cost of industrial accident insurance premiums, delivery workers classified as special-employment workers must split the premiums evenly with their employers, covering 50 percent themselves.
In response, the district will subsidize 90 percent of the worker-paid portion of industrial accident insurance premiums, up to a maximum of 100,000 won ($71) per year. The program is open to platform delivery workers aged 18 or older who either reside in Yeongdeungpo-gu or work at a business located in the district.
Applications are accepted from Aug. 10 through Dec. 7, and workers may apply for reimbursement of premiums paid out of pocket from January 2026 onward. The program may close early if the budget is exhausted. Details on how to apply and required documents are available on the Yeongdeungpo-gu website under the official notices board.
In addition, the district operates two rest shelters for mobile workers frequently exposed to extreme heat. The shelters are equipped with air conditioning and heating units, helmet dryers and mobile phone chargers, along with vending machines and refrigerators stocked with free cold water.
"I hope this insurance premium support eases the financial burden on delivery workers and reduces their anxiety about accidents," district mayor Cho Yu-jin said. "We will always listen to the hardships workers face on the ground and do our utmost to build a safe Yeongdeungpo where everyone can enjoy a dignified life."
Meanwhile, residents can share everyday inconveniences, policy suggestions or ideas related to Yeongdeungpo-gu directly with the district mayor via a dedicated text hotline.
