Seoul's Eunpyeong-gu will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the Susaek Future-Type Public Library at the construction site in Susaek-dong (21-1 Susaek-dong and surrounding lots).
District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung, local lawmakers, Seoul and district council members, construction officials and area residents have been invited to the ceremony to mark the start of construction.
The project traces its origins to 2008, when the Susaek-Jeungsan Redevelopment Promotion Plan designated the site for a public library. It has since advanced through the required administrative procedures and aims to expand the reading and cultural infrastructure long lacking in the Susaek-Jeungsan area.
The library will be the largest public library in Eunpyeong-gu, with a total floor area of 7,312.3 square meters spread across two buildings — four above-ground floors and one below-ground floor.
Inside, the facility will house a fourth-industrial-revolution experience center where visitors can engage directly with cutting-edge technology, as well as a dedicated children's reading space designed to let young readers develop their imagination in a safe environment. The library is planned as a multifunctional complex that goes beyond traditional library services to blend future-oriented education with reading and cultural programming.
The Susaek area is rapidly emerging as a new growth hub in northwestern Seoul, and the library is expected to serve as a key piece of cultural infrastructure completing the neighborhood's transformation and future vision.
"The Susaek Future-Type Public Library will be more than a place to read — it will be a dream space where our children grow into the creative talent who will lead the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and a hub of communication for all residents," district mayor Kim said. "From this groundbreaking onward, I will personally keep a close eye on every step to ensure construction proceeds safely and without a hitch."
