3 college students killed in head-on crash with dump truck after film shoot

Three college students were killed early Tuesday when their car crossed the center line and collided head-on with a dump truck as they were heading home after a film shoot.

According to Yonhap and the Anseong Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, the crash occurred around 4:50 a.m. Tuesday on National Route 38, across from Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts in Samjuk-myeon, Anseong.

The crash happened when the car, driven by a college student in his 20s identified only as A, crossed the center line for unknown reasons while traveling from the Iljuk interchange toward Anseong and struck an oncoming dump truck.

A was killed along with two passengers in the back seat — a man in his 20s identified as B and a woman identified as C.

B and C were students majoring in broadcasting-related fields at Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts. They had been riding in A's car; A was enrolled in a similar program at a different university.

The three had just wrapped up a film shoot in Anseong with about 20 other students and were on their way back to their respective homes near campus when the crash occurred.

National Route 38 at the site is a four-lane divided road, but the stretch where the crash occurred had no median barrier because of a nearby railroad crossing and intersection. The absence of a barrier left nothing to stop A's vehicle after it crossed the center line, which appears to have contributed to the severity of the crash.

The car was so severely damaged that investigators could not determine whether it had a dashcam, and the dump truck was not equipped with one either. Police plan to review footage from nearby CCTV cameras as part of their investigation.

The dump truck driver told police that the other vehicle had crossed the center line.
