Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province will formally launch its "Gangwon Medical and Wellness AX Transformation" initiative at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul on Thursday.
The project kickoff briefing is hosted by Rep. Song Ki-heon, chairman of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee.
The event will draw senior figures from government, the National Assembly, local authorities, public institutions and industry — including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon and Rep. Lee Gwang-jae, chairman of the National Assembly's Budget and Accounts Committee — underscoring the significance attached to advancing Gangwon's industrial base.
The initiative is part of the Ministry of Science and ICT's region-specific AI transformation program, which is being rolled out in phases across the country. Following a first phase covering four regions, a second phase is now being planned for three additional regions, including Gangwon. Gangwon's component focuses on medical AI and envisions a five-year program running from 2028 to 2032 at a scale of around 1 trillion won ($707 million).
The core aim is to validate AI medical devices and services developed by companies, then channel the results into technology improvement, regulatory approval and commercialization — creating what planners describe as a "city-scale validation and fast-track industrialization model for medical AI" in Gangwon.
