Lee Tae-han and Lee Hyeok have been recommended as candidates for special prosecutor to investigate allegations of voter rights violations, including a ballot shortage during the ninth nationwide local elections.
The Public Recommendation Committee for Special Prosecutor Candidates held its second meeting Friday morning and voted to recommend the two candidates, listed in Korean alphabetical order.
The committee reviewed six candidates put forward by the Korean Bar Association president and the chair of the Law School Association, evaluating them on submitted materials and professional backgrounds.
Members assessed whether each candidate could conduct an independent and impartial investigation into the alleged voter rights violations — including the ballot shortage — and whether they possessed the expertise required to carry out the duties of a special prosecutor.
After deliberation, the committee selected Lee Tae-han and Lee Hyeok as its final nominees. Under Article 3, Paragraph 5 of the relevant special prosecutor act, the committee will submit a written recommendation of the two candidates to the president before disbanding.
The president will then appoint one of the two recommended candidates as special prosecutor.
