Heavy rain to drench nation over Liberation Day holiday, with extreme downpours of 250 millimeters or more forecast for southern coast and Jirisan

Heavy rain is forecast to fall across the country over the Liberation Day holiday weekend as a low-pressure system formed from the remnants of Typhoon Dolphin, the 13th named storm of the season, moves in. Strong moisture flowing in from the southwest is expected to bring concentrated downpours, particularly to the southern regions and Jeju.

From Saturday through Monday, rainfall of up to 250 millimeters or more is forecast near the southern coast and Jirisan, up to 150 millimeters in the rest of South Gyeongsang Province, and up to 100 millimeters on Jeju outside of mountainous areas.

The heavy rain falling in a short period could cause damage, and residents are urged to take precautions.

As of 11 a.m. Saturday, rain was already falling around Jeju and the west coast. The rain is expected to spread to the southern coast by afternoon and across the entire southern region by evening, before extending nationwide — including central regions — from the early hours of Sunday.

As the low-pressure system moves out over the East Sea between early morning and the morning hours on Monday, the rain band is forecast to shift eastward, easing precipitation in central regions. By Monday afternoon, rain is expected to stop everywhere except Jeju, with showers on Jeju ending by Monday evening.

However, scattered showers could hit areas nationwide, excluding Jeju, on Monday afternoon.

As the gap narrows between the approaching low-pressure system from the southwest and a high-pressure system to the east of the Korean Peninsula, southerly winds carrying heavy moisture are expected to blow with considerable force.

The Korea Meteorological Administration warned that particularly intense rain is expected during vulnerable hours when rapid response is difficult, and urged the public to prepare in advance. Heavy rain falling in a short time could cause streams and rivers to rise suddenly, and anyone near valleys or waterways should evacuate immediately if the sky darkens.
