Rain to sweep nation on second day of Liberation Day holiday, with heavy downpours and thunder in south

Cloudy skies and rain are expected across the country on Sunday, the second day of the Liberation Day holiday weekend.

The southern regions and Jeju Island will bear the brunt of the weather, with very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Strong gusts exceeding 70 kilometers per hour are forecast along the southern coast from the morning, and weather authorities may issue a strong-wind advisory for the area.

However, conditions in the central regions are expected to ease in many areas from late afternoon.

Forecast rainfall totals for the three-day period from Saturday through Monday are: 20–60 millimeters for Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong Province and North Chungcheong Province, with more than 80 mm possible in southeastern Daejeon and South Chungcheong and in central and southern North Chungcheong; 50–100 mm for Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, with more than 200 mm possible along the eastern South Jeolla coast and more than 150 mm near the western South Jeolla coast and Jirisan; 30–80 mm for North Jeolla Province; and 100–200 mm along the western South Gyeongsang coast and near Jirisan, with more than 250 mm possible in the heaviest-hit areas.

Busan, Ulsan, the central South Gyeongsang southern coast and inland South Gyeongsang (excluding the Jirisan area) can expect 50–150 mm, with more than 200 mm possible in Busan and along the central South Gyeongsang southern coast. Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province are forecast to receive 50–100 mm, with more than 120 mm in some areas, while Jeju Island is expected to see 50–100 mm, with more than 200 mm possible in mountainous areas and more than 120 mm in mid-mountain zones.

For the two-day period Sunday through Monday, Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province and inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province are forecast to receive 20–60 mm, while the Gangwon east coast is expected to see 5–40 mm.

Morning lows are forecast at 21–25 degrees Celsius, with afternoon highs of 24–30 degrees.

Fine dust levels are expected to be "good" across the country.

Wave heights are forecast at 0.5–2.5 meters in the East Sea and South Sea nearshore waters, and 0.5–1.5 meters in the West Sea nearshore waters.

In the open seas within about 200 kilometers of the coastline, wave heights are expected to reach 0.5–3.5 meters in the East Sea, 0.5–2.5 meters in the West Sea and 1.0–3.5 meters in the South Sea.
