Veteran actress who debuted at 11 months old dies at 37

American actor Hayden Panettiere has died at 37.

According to The New York Times, Panettiere's father, Skip Panettiere, announced her death through a publicist on behalf of the family Monday. No specific cause or circumstances of death were disclosed.

In a statement, the family said they were "sharing with deep sadness the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," describing her as "an incredible light and a person of intense energy who brought immeasurable love and joy to everyone around her." They added that she had brought "love and joy to the millions who watched her on screen," and asked that the family's privacy be respected "as they take time to process this unimaginable loss."

Panettiere made her debut at 11 months old in a commercial and went on to work as a child actor in drama series including "One Life to Live" and "Guiding Light." She gained wider recognition in 2000 when she appeared alongside Denzel Washington in "Remember the Titans."

In 2011, she played the spirited and bold Kirby Reed in the horror film "Scream 4," a role she reprised in "Scream 6," released in 2023. Wes Craven, who directed "Scream 4," praised her at the time as "a real powerhouse," saying she had "strong technical ability and can convey powerful emotion in a short amount of time" and was "smart and full of life, laughter and fun."

She played rising music star Juliette Barnes in "Nashville," a drama series set in the world of country music, earning Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress in a TV drama series in both 2013 and 2014.

Her personal life, however, was far from easy. While filming "Nashville" in 2014, Panettiere gave birth to a daughter, Kaya, with former boxer Wladimir Klitschko. She later said she developed postpartum depression after the birth and turned to alcohol and drugs to cope.

She spoke openly in the years that followed about her struggles with alcohol and substance abuse, stints in rehabilitation, and a custody dispute over her daughter. In 2020, she said she had achieved sobriety after completing treatment. In 2023, she suffered another family loss when her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died suddenly of heart disease at 28.
