Yeongdeungpo-gu has launched a preemptive cleanup of hazards around schools to create a safe commuting environment ahead of the new semester.
The initiative aims to protect students returning from summer vacation from exposure to harmful advertisements and dangerous signage, while also addressing illegal parking that poses traffic accident risks along school routes.
From Aug. 11 through Aug. 21, the district conducted a street environment cleanup focused on child protection zones and education environment protection zones around 44 elementary, middle and high schools. Areas outside those designated zones were also included if they posed safety concerns or potential exposure to harmful conditions during school commutes.
The main targets include hazardous and harmful advertisements — such as flyers, posters and business cards — as well as unlicensed street stalls and illegally stored goods that obstruct pedestrians or create safety hazards. Banners, standing signs and display boards that block children's sightlines and raise the risk of traffic accidents are receiving particular scrutiny, and deteriorating signage at risk of damage or falling will be repaired or removed.
A special crackdown on illegal parking in child protection zones is running concurrently. From Tuesday through Aug. 28, two-person enforcement teams are conducting vehicle guidance and compliance activities centered on 23 elementary schools and child protection zones.
After the cleanup period ends, the district plans to continue removing hazards, maintaining facilities and carrying out improvements to school commute routes, with the goal of building a safe environment that gives both parents and children peace of mind.
"We will carefully inspect the streets around schools so that children — the future of Yeongdeungpo — can attend school safely and grow up in a good environment," District Mayor Jo said.
