The streets of the university district of Sinchon will transform into a sprawling campus for young people from around the world for three days this September.
Seodaemun-gu is home to nine universities, roughly 94,000 college students and about 12,000 international students — assets the district is channeling into a global campus experience on the streets of Sinchon.
Seodaemun-gu, led by District Mayor Park Un-gi, will host the 2026 Sinchon Global University Culture Festival along Yonsei-ro from Sept. 11 to 13.
Held under the slogan "Global Wave, Sinchon Vibe," the festival is organized by Seodaemun-gu and co-hosted by a central planning committee of university students.
Last year's three-day festival drew about 490,000 people to the Sinchon area, with college students, international students and residents mingling to showcase the district's vibrant university culture. This year, organizers are stepping up programs that youth can plan and take part in directly.
Unlike typical street festivals where attendees simply watch performances, this edition is designed as a "youth participation festival." College students and international students will be directly involved in planning, performing, competing and running experience booths, bringing together Sinchon's university culture and the cultures of countries around the world in one place.
On the opening day, Sept. 11, university students will fill Yonsei-ro with energy. Performances by university cheering squads, flag corps and student clubs will kick off the proceedings, followed by an opening ceremony and a celebratory concert featuring Crying Nut and other acts.
On Sept. 12, the entire stretch of Yonsei-ro becomes a stage, sports ground and open-air classroom. Highlights include the "Sinchon SWYFT (Seodaemun With Youth Festival Together)" athletics event, in which domestic and international students compete together in mixed teams; "Sinchon UNI.ON," where student clubs showcase their talents; and "Sinchon University Street Lectures," bringing campus knowledge and stories to the public.
On the final day, Sept. 13, the festival's stage opens to the world. A world culture performance featuring traditional and contemporary acts from various countries, a K-pop singing contest for international students living in Korea, and a closing concert will bring the three-day event to a close.
The district is recruiting participants for key programs as part of its effort to move away from a top-down, administration-driven model and toward a festival built and experienced by young people themselves.
The flagship "Sinchon SWYFT Athletics" event will be held free of charge on Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. Up to 200 domestic and international students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; all participants will receive commemorative gifts including a group T-shirt and keycap. A prize draw will also be held.
The international student K-pop singing contest is open to any international student living in Korea. Applicants may enter individually or as a group of up to 10, and must submit a one-to-two-minute performance video along with an application form by Aug. 30.
Twelve acts selected through online preliminaries will compete in the final round on the festival's main stage from 4 p.m. on Thursday. A total of 2 million won ($1,418) in prize money will be awarded to five teams, including a grand prize of 1 million won.
Experience booths on Sept. 12 and 13 will be organized into three categories — "Global Culture," "World Food" and "University Students" — offering visitors a hands-on encounter with cultures from around the world and from local campuses.
The "Global Culture" and "World Food" booths will feature foreign embassies, tourism boards and cultural centers based in Korea, introducing traditional dress, languages, tourism and cuisine from their respective countries. The "University Students" booths will see clubs, student organizations and international student groups present their activities and research, along with interactive content showcasing campus life.
By drawing domestic and international youth to linger in Sinchon as they enjoy the cultural offerings, the festival is also expected to inject new energy into the local commercial district.
