Daegu to host 2030 World Pattern Recognition Conference

Daegu has secured the right to host the 2030 Conference of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (ICPR 2030), one of the world's most prestigious academic events in AI and pattern recognition.

According to the city, Daegu was selected as the final host city at an IAPR board meeting held Wednesday (local time) in Lyon, France, beating out a competing bid from Canada.

It will be the first time the conference has been held in South Korea.

The ICPR is the flagship international academic event of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), which was formally established in 1978. The conference brings together researchers and industry professionals from around the world to share the latest findings and technologies in AI and pattern recognition.

Pattern recognition is a core AI technology in which computers extract features from diverse data — including images, audio and text — to identify and classify specific patterns.

It is widely applied across industries including robotics, autonomous driving, smart manufacturing and healthcare.

The successful bid resulted from a systematic campaign led by a host committee comprising the IAPR board, the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers and its AI Society, and leading academics from South Korea and abroad.

The Korea Tourism Organization provided support, while Daegu city and Exco played active roles in driving the effort to a successful conclusion.

The 2030 ICPR is scheduled to run for six days in August 2030 at Exco, drawing about 1,200 researchers and industry professionals from 50 countries, including 600 international participants.

Daegu expects the conference to generate total economic ripple effects of 8.2 billion won ($5.84 million), including 5.7 billion won in production-inducing effects and 2.5 billion won in value-added effects.

"Securing the World Pattern Recognition Conference is a meaningful achievement that will showcase Daegu's capabilities in future industries to the world and expand our global research network," Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho said. "We will actively support local research institutions and companies in creating real opportunities for joint research and industrial cooperation through a successful event."
