The National Council of Metropolitan and Provincial Autonomous Police Commission Chairs will hold its 38th regular meeting Wednesday at St. John's Hotel in Gangneung.
Participants are expected to share updates on the government's efforts to reform the autonomous police system and discuss joint measures to strengthen the role and functions of autonomous police commissions and advance the system.
The commission chairs from across the country plan to submit a petition to the government calling for guaranteed participation of all metropolitan and provincial autonomous police commissions in the pan-government consultative body discussing ways to develop the autonomous police system, adequate staffing to provide policing services that residents can tangibly feel ahead of the full rollout of the system, and the establishment of an efficient operational framework.
Jo Myeong-su, chair of the national council and head of the Gangwon Province chapter, stressed the need for closer communication with the central government. "The autonomous police system is an important system designed to reflect regional characteristics and residents' needs in order to deliver policing services that people can actually feel," he said. "The metropolitan and provincial autonomous police commissions across the country will work closely together to ensure that frontline experience and voices are fully reflected in the government's reform process."
