North Gyeongsang education office to relocate Sangju special school by 2031

The North Gyeongsang Provincial Office of Education announced Tuesday it plans to relocate Sanghui School, a public special school in Sangju, targeting March 2031.

Established in Namseong-dong in 1986, Sanghui School serves students with intellectual disabilities. Now more than 40 years old, the facility has deteriorated significantly.

The new school, to be built in Seongdong-dong, will have 25 classes spanning kindergarten through high school vocational courses, with capacity for 150 students.

The campus will include a main teaching building, an independent-living education center and various other learning spaces designed with the safety and accessibility needs of students with disabilities in mind.

The education office plans to hold a community information session in the second half of this year to build public understanding and cooperation around the relocation.

"The relocation of Sanghui School is a project to help students with disabilities learn in a safer, more comfortable environment and prepare for their dreams and futures," North Gyeongsang Provincial Superintendent of Education Im Jong-sik said. "We will communicate fully with local residents and carefully reflect the community's views."
