South Chungcheong Province beckons with autumn festivals, history and seasonal flavors

September marks the start of autumn in South Chungcheong Province, where history, culture, festivals and fresh West Sea seasonal cuisine await travelers seeking rest and rejuvenation.

South Chungcheong Province released the September issue of its "Monthly Chungnam" travel magazine Wednesday, themed "South Chungcheong, Where Autumn Excitement Begins," spotlighting the province's top fall destinations.

Cheonan and Asan: autumn amid culture and festivals

Cheonan and Asan are easy autumn getaways from the Greater Seoul area, well connected by Cheonan-Asan station, subway lines, city tour buses and tourism taxis. In Cheonan, visitors can walk the forest trails of Taejosan Park before exploring the restaurants and cafes of the Yuryang-dong food culture street, while Hwasumok Beautiful Garden in Mokcheon offers a scenic stroll through seasonal blooms.

The Independence Hall of Korea will host the 2026 Cheonan K-Culture Expo from Wednesday through Sept. 6, showcasing hansik, webtoons, K-pop and more through exhibitions and hands-on experiences.

The historic site of independence activist Yu Gwan-sun offers a window into the Aunae March First Movement and her legacy, and carries special significance as Sept. 28 marks the anniversary of her death.

The Hong Daeyong Science Museum features astronomy and space exhibitions and interactive experiences, while Byeongcheon Sundae Street is the place to sample Cheonan's signature local dish.

The recommended Cheonan itinerary runs: Taejosan Park → Yuryang-dong food culture street → Hwasumok Beautiful Garden → Independence Hall of Korea (2026 Cheonan K-Culture Expo, Sept. 2–6) → Yu Gwan-sun historic site → Byeongcheon Sundae Street → Hong Daeyong Science Museum.

In Asan, the Gokgyocheon Ginkgo Tree Road — a 2.1-kilometer stretch from Chungmu Bridge to the entrance of Hyeonchungsa Shrine, lined with ginkgo trees more than 60 years old — offers a quintessential autumn walk.

The Yi Sun-sin Tourism Experience Center "Yeohaenaru" presents the admiral's life through exhibitions and activities, while Hyeonchungsa Shrine invites visitors to explore its shrine hall, historic residence, archery range and memorial hall. A special heritage media art show, "Yi Sun-sin, Return of the Soul," runs at the shrine from Sept. 18 through Oct. 11.

Sinjeongho Garden offers lakeside walks and themed garden areas. The garden hosts the "Midsummer Night Starlight Festival" from Sept. 5 to 6 and the "Dalgeullak Festival" from Sept. 11 to 12.

Onyang Folk Museum and the Onyang Hot Spring traditional market showcase Asan's folk culture and local food, Oeam Folk Village features historic houses and stone-wall lanes, and Gongse-ri Cathedral is noted for its Gothic architecture and surrounding scenery.

Gongju and Buyeo: autumn nights lit by history and light

Gongju and Buyeo are home to Baekje history and UNESCO World Heritage sites, where visitors can trace ancient ruins and soak in the atmosphere of autumn evenings filled with tradition, festivals and illuminated landscapes.

In Gongju, the Gongju National Museum traces the history and culture of the Ungjin Baekje period, while the nearby Baekje Cultural Center brings those stories to life through media art and interactive content.

Gongju Hanok Village will host the "Oh My God Jungjoje Gatsaeng Pungnyu Festival" from Sept. 11 to 12, offering traditional cultural experiences and performances in a hanok setting.

The Tomb of King Muryeong and the Royal Tombs complex invites visitors to stroll pine forest paths tracing Baekje royal history, while Gongsanseong Fortress commands sweeping views of the Geum River and Gongju city center.

Sanseong Market sells local chestnuts and other seasonal produce and hosts the "Sanseong Market Bammassil Night Market" every Friday and Saturday from Sept. 4 through Oct. 17. Along the Jemin Stream, the "Gongju Heritage Night Tour" runs Sept. 4–6 and the Gongju Festival takes place Sept. 19.

This year's Heritage Night Tour carries special significance, marking the centenary of the publication of the "Gongju City Map" in 1926. Themed "1926 Gongju Romantic Revelry," the event unfolds against the backdrop of the former Gongju Town Hall and Gongju First Church.

The South Chungcheong History Museum, another venue for the night tour, offers a look at the lives and culture of Chungcheong people from the Joseon era through modern times, while Jungdong Cathedral showcases the elegance of modern cultural heritage with its distinctive red brick and pointed arches.

The recommended Gongju itinerary runs: Gongju National Museum → Baekje Cultural Center → Gongju Hanok Village (Gatsaeng Pungnyu Festival, Sept. 11–12) → Tomb of King Muryeong and Royal Tombs → Gongsanseong Fortress → Sanseong Market (Bammassil Night Market, Sept. 4–Oct. 17) → Jemin Stream (Gongju Festival, Sept. 19) → former Gongju Town Hall (Gongju Heritage Night Tour, Sept. 4–6) → South Chungcheong History Museum → Jungdong Cathedral.

In Buyeo, the 123 Sabi Craft Village — a revitalized alley of workshops, shops and cafes built around the old lanes near the Baengmagang River ferry dock — hosts the "123 Sabi Craft Festa" from Sept. 12 to 13.

The Baekje Cultural Complex recreates the royal palace and daily life of the Sabi period, and evening openings allow visitors to experience Baekje's nighttime splendor under illumination.

Busosanseong Fortress offers visits to Nakhwaam Rock and Goransa Temple, while Gungnamji Pond preserves the form of a Baekje royal garden.

The Buyeo National Museum holds major Sabi-period artifacts including the Baekje Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner, and Jeongnimsaji Temple Site features the five-story stone pagoda and seated stone Buddha.

Jeongnimsaji will host the "2026 Heritage Media Art" show from Sept. 7 to 27, themed "Sabi Scholar," reinterpreting the spirit and culture of Baekje through light and video.

The recommended Buyeo itinerary runs: 123 Sabi Craft Village (Sabi Craft Festa, Sept. 12–13) → Baekje Cultural Complex → Busosanseong Fortress → Gungnamji Pond → Buyeo National Museum → Jeongnimsaji Temple Site (Heritage Media Art "Sabi Scholar," Sept. 7–27).

Hongseong and Taean: autumn flavors along the West Sea sunset

Hongseong and Taean delight visitors with stunning West Sea scenery and fresh seasonal seafood, offering a relaxed autumn experience of harbor dining, coastal walks and glowing sunsets.

In Hongseong, Namdang Harbor is the hub for autumn sea views and fresh seasonal shrimp. A 15-minute boat ride from the harbor reaches Jukdo, Hongseong's only inhabited island, where bamboo groves meet ocean vistas. The harbor's marine fountain park features a musical fountain with evening lighting, and the "Shrimp Festival" runs from Sept. 4 through Nov. 8.

Namdang Sunset Observatory and Hongseong Sky Tower both offer panoramic West Sea sunsets, while Sokdong Coastal Park combines sea views with floral scenery.

The recommended Hongseong itinerary runs: Jukdo → Namdang Harbor marine fountain park → Namdang Harbor (Shrimp Festival, Sept. 4–Nov. 8) → Namdang Sunset Observatory → Hongseong Sky Tower → Sokdong Coastal Park.

In Taean, the Yeongmok Harbor Observatory on Anmyeondo Island surveys the West Sea and surrounding islands, while Kkotji Beach — one of the coast's premier sunset spots — frames the sun setting between Halmi Rock and Halabi Rock.

The "Taean Hanwoo Kkotji Wasseo" beef festival runs at Kkotji Beach from Sept. 4 to 6. From Sept. 12 to 19, Baeksajang Harbor on Anmyeondo hosts the "Anmyeondo Baeksajang Shrimp Festival," where visitors can sample fresh seasonal seafood and walk the maritime pedestrian bridge "Daeharan Kkotgerang."

The Taean Marine Healing Center offers therapeutic programs using natural resources including saltwater and peat, providing rest and recovery by the sea, while the Baekhwasan Sky Bridge commands an open panorama of mountains and coastline.

The recommended Taean itinerary runs: Anmyeondo Yeongmok Harbor Observatory → Kkotji Beach (Taean Hanwoo Kkotji Wasseo, Sept. 4–6) → Baeksajang Harbor (Anmyeondo Baeksajang Shrimp Festival, Sept. 12–19) → Taean Marine Healing Center → Baekhwasan Sky Bridge.

September festivals across South Chungcheong Province

Distinctive local festivals fill the province throughout September, including the Cheonan K-Culture Expo, the Boryeong Muchangpo Mysterious Sea Road Festival, the Yesan White Stork Festival, the Taean Daengdaengi Beach Sports Day and the Gongju Festival.

Heritage night tours continue in Gongju, Nonsan Ganggyeong and Seocheon, while heritage media art events run in Buyeo and Asan. Starting Sept. 13, a drone light show will illuminate the night sky above Sapgyoho Lake in Dangjin every Saturday.

Seasonal food festivals round out the calendar, including the Seocheon Gizzard Shad and Blue Crab Festival, the Hongseong Namdang Harbor and Taean Anmyeondo Baeksajang shrimp festivals, and the Cheongyang Chili Pepper and Wolfberry Festival.

Visitors to the province this autumn can take advantage of a range of tourism benefits prepared for the "2025–2026 Visit South Chungcheong Year" campaign.

Current offerings include the Chungnam Tour Pass, half-price tourism taxis, half-price rail travel packages and a digital tourism resident card.

Starting next month, visitors to Seocheon and Taean will receive partial reimbursements on travel expenses under a Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism pilot program supporting regional tourism, with eligible tourists able to claim refunds of up to 500,000 won ($362).
