Samsung Electronics unveils next-generation portable SSDs with industry-leading transfer speeds

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday (local time) unveiled two next-generation portable solid-state drives — the P9 and P7 — at Gamescom 2026, the world's largest gaming expo, held in Cologne, Germany.

The new products are optimized for environments where data volumes are surging, including ultra-high-definition video, AI content and large-scale games. The lineup consists of the flagship P9, built for maximum performance for professionals, and the P7, designed to deliver fast and convenient storage across a wide range of everyday uses.

The P9 runs on a USB4 interface and supports sequential read speeds of up to 4,000 megabytes per second and sequential write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s — the highest in the industry. Both sequential read and write speeds are roughly double those of the previous-generation T9 and T7 models in the T series.

The P9 is also the world's first 8-terabyte USB4 product to support 4,000 MB/s, an achievement that earned it a CES 2026 Innovation Award.

The P9 is tailored for professional creators. Its strong sequential write performance supports 12K direct recording in professional shooting environments, allowing large RAW photo files and ultra-high-resolution video to be stored and edited without interruption.

The P7, also built on next-generation USB4 technology, is designed for easy, convenient use across work, entertainment and daily life. It is compatible with a broad range of host devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and cameras.

Both models have passed a 2-meter drop test and durability verification for shock and vibration, ensuring data protection in outdoor or high-mobility environments.

The portable SSD P series will be available in four capacities — 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB — with a phased global rollout, including South Korea, beginning next month.
