Yangdeokwon Cathedral in Yangdeokwon-ri, Nam-myeon, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Province, greets visitors with a gleaming white exterior that seems to cleanse the mind the moment it comes into view.
A historic space woven into the life of the local community, the cathedral stands apart from conventional church architecture through its deliberately simple, unadorned facade — no ornate decoration, no soaring spire.
Its origins trace to the 1870s, when Catholic faithful fleeing persecution in Chungcheong Province sought refuge in Gangwon Province. They supported themselves by firing earthenware pottery, gradually forming a Catholic settlement and eventually building a church that became the foundation of what is now Yangdeokwon Cathedral.
The cathedral's pure-white exterior has drawn visitor after visitor to describe it as "almost blinding." The deliberate rejection of ornate facades and interiors calls to mind the spirit of the White Temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
It also evokes the brown-toned face of the Virgin Mary at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain — a complexion that mirrors the weathered skin of the people who labor there. The cathedral reads not as a structure that lords over its community, but as one that walks alongside it, in plain heart and plain appearance.
Hongcheon-gun and the Gangwon Province History and Culture Research Institute announced Wednesday they are pursuing designation of Yangdeokwon Cathedral as a registered cultural heritage site under Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.
It is a cultural heritage site well worth the Cultural Heritage Administration's attention for national registration.
In the way its community built a village through pottery-making and sustained hope through faith, the cathedral shares a kinship with Baeron Holy Site in Jecheon.
Its long history of walking alongside villagers and respecting local folk traditions also recalls Pungsuwan Cathedral, located not far away.
The Gangwon Province History and Culture Research Institute and Hongcheon-gun will hold an academic conference Friday, led by experts and residents, to examine the cathedral's historical and architectural value and build the case for its heritage designation.
Three presentations are scheduled: "The History and Significance of Hongcheon Yangdeokwon Parish," "Architectural Features and Transformation Analysis of Yangdeokwon Cathedral and Future Challenges," and "Yangdeokwon Cathedral as a Hub of Local Care and Vitality."
A general discussion will then take up the cathedral's value as a cultural heritage site, the prospects for registered heritage designation, and the direction of future preservation and use.
Hongcheon-gun said it will use the conference findings as the basis for formally pursuing registered cultural heritage status for the cathedral.
