Yeongdeungpo-gu is hosting a special exhibition, "ART TO DREAM," in the third-floor corridor of the district office's main building, showcasing the distinctive perspectives of artists with developmental disabilities.
The exhibition was organized to give artists with developmental disabilities an opportunity to share their talents while offering residents a chance to improve disability awareness and enjoy culture in their everyday lives.
Held under the theme "Drawing with Art, Moving Forward with Dreams," the exhibition presents 20 works in total — 10 canvas paintings by eight members of "Atteu (art)," a group of artists with developmental disabilities at a local welfare center, and 10 AI artworks created by seven students from the center's AI Academy.
The acrylic-on-fabric works evoke a warm, storybook atmosphere. "Lighthouse," depicting a blue sea, green hills and a red lighthouse, looks like a postcard come to life. "Emperor Penguin," rendered in candid lines and bold colors, calls to mind the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Other highlights include "Waggle Waggle Spring Garden," "Blue Sea Turtle" and "Leopard" — works that carry a pure, resonant message to the world.
An opening ceremony was held Tuesday. Artists with developmental disabilities took the stage to introduce their works and creative intentions in their own words, leaving a strong impression on those gathered at the event.
The works will be displayed along the corridor walls surrounding the planning situation room on the third floor of the district office's main building from Aug. 25 through Nov. 25 — a three-month run. Anyone visiting the district office is welcome to view them free of charge.
"I hope this exhibition becomes an opportunity for many residents to discover the artistic potential and talent of people with developmental disabilities," Yeongdeungpo-gu District Mayor Jo Yu-jin said. "We will continue to offer our full attention and support so that artists with disabilities can freely pursue their dreams."
