Gunwi-gun in Daegu and Uiseong-gun in North Gyeongsang Province welcomed the passage of a preliminary feasibility study for the Daegu-North Gyeongsang metropolitan railway construction project on Wednesday.
The two counties said the clearance carries significant weight, as it secures a key infrastructure foundation that will not only build out a metropolitan transport network linking Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province but also improve access to the Daegu-North Gyeongsang integrated new airport.
They added that, given the metropolitan railway and the integrated new airport are closely linked core projects, they hope the feasibility clearance will serve as a catalyst for the swift advancement of the main airport project.
However, Uiseong-gun expressed concern over delays in securing funding for the military airport relocation project, saying that since the metropolitan railway has cleared its feasibility study and is moving into full follow-up procedures, the integrated new airport must also finalize its funding and proceed with the main project without delay.
"We strongly welcome the passage of the Daegu-North Gyeongsang metropolitan railway feasibility study," Uiseong-gun County Chief Choi Yu-cheol said. "We hope this achievement leads to the early advancement of the integrated new airport's main project."
Gunwi-gun said it plans to continue cooperating with relevant agencies to ensure the follow-up procedures for the Daegu-North Gyeongsang metropolitan railway construction project proceed smoothly, while also actively working to advance road and rail network development and surrounding area development projects tied to the new airport.
"The feasibility clearance for the Daegu-North Gyeongsang metropolitan railway is a meaningful achievement reached together with Gunwi residents who have long hoped for the success of the new airport and a new leap forward for Gunwi," Gunwi-gun County Chief Kim Jin-yeol said. "With access to the new airport dramatically improved, Gunwi-gun has gained the opportunity to emerge as the true central city of the new airport economic zone."
