Singer Hong Jin-young recently shared photos of her face flushing red after just a few sips of beer, drawing attention to what is commonly known as alcohol flush reaction. Many dismiss the phenomenon as simply having a low tolerance for alcohol, but it can be a physiological signal tied to how the body breaks down alcohol.
Hong posted photos on her SNS account with a caption that read: "I'm a lightweight, but I wanted to get into the mood and tried to have a glass of beer. After three sips, I turned as red as the third photo — and I'm a little tipsy all by myself. #NotASecret."
She added: "People don't believe me when I say I can't drink. They say I look like someone who can hold their liquor — but looks can be deceiving." The photos showed her smiling while holding a glass of beer, followed by a shot of her visibly flushed face.
The reddening of the face after drinking is commonly referred to as alcohol flush reaction. It can occur when acetaldehyde — a byproduct produced as the body breaks down alcohol — accumulates in the body. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) explains that alcohol is first converted into acetaldehyde, which the ALDH enzyme then metabolizes into the less toxic substance acetic acid.
The problem arises when the body cannot efficiently break down acetaldehyde. As a toxic metabolite of alcohol, acetaldehyde can build up in the body and trigger not only facial flushing but also nausea, heart palpitations, headaches and a sensation of heat. The NIAAA notes that genetic variants affecting alcohol metabolism can cause acetaldehyde to accumulate, leading to facial flushing, nausea and an elevated heart rate.
The reaction is particularly common among people of East Asian descent. The NIAAA says approximately 36 percent of people of East Asian heritage — including those of Chinese, Japanese and Korean descent — carry a genetic variant that affects the function of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, which can cause acetaldehyde to build up and produce facial flushing, nausea and a rapid heartbeat.
The Cleveland Clinic also lists reddening of the skin on the face, neck and chest as a hallmark symptom of alcohol intolerance — a condition in which the body cannot fully digest or break down alcohol. In addition to facial flushing, alcohol intolerance can be accompanied by an increased heart rate, headaches, nausea, vomiting, nasal congestion and low blood pressure.
People who flush red after just a few sips of beer should not chalk it up to being a "fast absorber" — they should consider the possibility that their body has a limited ability to metabolize alcohol. Drinking more frequently does not improve this condition. Facial flushing is closer to a warning signal that the body is struggling to handle alcohol's metabolic byproducts.
There is another reason people who experience alcohol flush reaction should be particularly cautious: long-term health risks. The NIAAA explains that people who carry variants associated with alcohol flushing — such as the ALDH2 gene variant — face not only unpleasant reactions when drinking but also a heightened risk of esophageal cancer.
Acetaldehyde is not merely a substance that reddens the face — it is a toxic metabolite. Repeated exposure to acetaldehyde each time a person drinks can burden the tissues alcohol passes through, including the mouth, throat and esophagus. The risk is even greater for those who also smoke.
Not everyone who flushes red after drinking has an alcohol allergy. Alcohol intolerance is a reaction related to enzyme function in breaking down alcohol, while an allergy involves an immune response. If symptoms such as hives, swelling of the lips or throat, difficulty breathing or severe dizziness appear after drinking, they should not be dismissed as simple flushing — medical attention is warranted. The Cleveland Clinic also notes that alcohol allergy and intolerance are distinct conditions, and that anyone with severe symptoms should consult a healthcare provider.
Taking medication to suppress facial flushing in order to drink more is also inadvisable. A less visible flush does not mean that acetaldehyde accumulation or the body's overall burden from alcohol has disappeared. Masking the symptoms while increasing alcohol consumption can lead a person to ignore the warning signals their body is sending.
The safest approach is to acknowledge one's own reaction and reduce alcohol intake. If a few sips are enough to cause flushing, palpitations, nausea or headaches, avoiding alcohol as much as possible is the better choice. When drinking cannot be avoided, it helps to eat beforehand, drink slowly, stay hydrated and stop as soon as the face begins to flush or the heart starts racing.
Drinking culture also warrants attention. Telling someone who flushes red that "you'll build up a tolerance if you keep drinking" is not sound health advice. Alcohol flush reaction is not simply a matter of embarrassment or social awkwardness — it can be a sign that the body is having difficulty processing alcohol.
If your face turns red after just a few sips of beer, or if facial flushing recurs after drinking, cutting back or avoiding alcohol altogether is the safer choice. When flushing is accompanied by palpitations, difficulty breathing or hives, seeking medical evaluation is strongly recommended.
