Samil PwC, Seoul National University to hold joint climate risk forum in Busan

Samil PwC announced Thursday that it will co-host a forum with Seoul National University's Climate Tech Center at the 2026 World Climate Industry Expo at Bexco in Busan on Sept. 17. The forum will be held under the theme "Making Climate Risk Decision-Ready."

The event is designed to examine how companies and financial institutions can manage climate risk, and to discuss ways to apply quantitative assessment results to real-world decisions in management, investment and insurance.

The forum will open with remarks by Seoul National University Professor Jeong Su-jong, followed by a welcome address from Lee Gi-beom, director of the Climate Action Division at the Korea Energy Agency. Three thematic sessions are then scheduled to follow.

In the first session, Jang Min-hee, a team leader at SNU's Climate Tech Center, will present on the current state and challenges of climate risk diagnostic technology. The presentation will identify technical limitations and bottlenecks in producing climate risk information for use by companies and financial institutions, and outline directions for improvement.

The second session will feature Kang Min-ji, a senior researcher at Samsung Fire's Corporate Safety Research Institute, who will discuss how natural disaster risk assessment and loss-prevention expertise can be integrated into climate risk management. She will also share methods for using the insurance protection gap to diagnose corporate risk exposure and develop response strategies.

In the final session, Kwon Mi-yeop, a partner at Samil PwC's sustainability platform, will present on the financial integration of climate risk and its application to decision-making. The session will review key trends in climate-related financial disclosure regimes and address how disclosure information can be linked to financial and management systems for practical use.

Following the presentations, Professor Jeong will chair a panel discussion. Participants will include Kim Tae-hyeong, ESG task force leader at GS Energy; Lee Seung-jun, a team leader at SK hynix; Yoo Geon-ho, a research fellow at Mirae Asset Securities; and Lee Su-won, a deputy director at Korea Investment Corporation. The panel will discuss approaches to climate risk management in investment, finance and corporate decision-making.

"This forum is a venue for exploring how climate risk information can be put to practical use in management and investment," Kwon said. "We hope it will help build a disclosure framework and climate ecosystem that companies and investors can actually use in their decision-making as climate disclosure regulations take shape."

Meanwhile, Samil PwC — which operates on a June fiscal year — posted sales of 1.11 trillion won ($810 million) for the fiscal year ended June 2025, up about 8.4 percent from the prior year. Operating profit for the same period surged 55.6 percent year-on-year to about 25.4 billion won, reflecting both top-line growth and improved profitability.
