Korea Customs Service names first 'Drug Busting Officer of the Month'

Kim Young-jae, an officer at Incheon Airport Customs, has been named the inaugural Drug Busting Officer of the Month. The Korea Customs Service said Monday it will select a winner each month starting in September to identify and recognize employees who have made outstanding contributions to blocking drug smuggling.

The monthly award was introduced to find and encourage frontline officers who have achieved exceptional results in drug interdiction, as smuggling operations grow increasingly large-scale and sophisticated. The agency also aims to share award recipients' techniques and case studies across the organization.

Kim earned the honor for first apprehending a drug courier at the point of entry, then pursuing the case further to arrest additional couriers and a domestic retail distributor, ultimately exposing the full scope of an organized smuggling operation.

Kim noticed that the initial courier had been recruited through a high-paying part-time job posting on social media, and closely analyzed communications records and related information to track down and arrest the additional couriers and distributor. He was recognized for going beyond a simple drug seizure to trace the links in the criminal chain through follow-up investigation, uncovering the structure of an organized smuggling and distribution network.

The Korea Customs Service plans to expand the monthly award program to all customs offices nationwide. At year's end, it will select the most outstanding monthly winner as the Drug Busting Officer of the Year, offering incentives including special promotion and performance bonuses.

The agency also plans to broaden the award categories to cover all areas of drug interdiction — including investigations, cargo inspection, X-ray screening and intelligence analysis — to encourage active enforcement by specialists in each field and build a tighter overall system for blocking drug smuggling.

"The results we achieve in stopping drug smuggling ultimately come from the expertise and dedication of the officers who quietly carry out their duties on the front lines of our borders," Commissioner Lee Jong-wook said. "We will continue to actively identify outstanding enforcement achievements and know-how, ensure that individual results translate into organizational capability, and steadily strengthen our frontline response to build a society safe from drugs."
