Man wearing electronic ankle bracelet arrested for secretly filming teenage girls at Seoul fireworks festival

A man in his 50s wearing an electronic ankle bracelet was arrested for secretly filming teenage girls at the Seoul International Fireworks Festival.

The Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station said Monday it had booked the suspect, identified only as A, on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes — specifically the provision on filming using cameras or similar devices — and is currently investigating him.

A is accused of using his mobile phone to secretly film parts of the bodies of two teenage girls at Yeouido Han River Park, where the festival was held, at around 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

He is believed to have committed the act by exploiting the crowded conditions as large numbers of people gathered ahead of the fireworks display.

Police responded to a report from a bystander and arrested A on the spot. He was found to be wearing an electronic ankle bracelet at the time of his arrest.

A denied the charges during police questioning.

Police applied for a detention warrant for A, but prosecutors rejected the request. Police plan to conduct forensic analysis of his mobile phone to determine whether he committed any additional offenses.
