Land Ministry receives basic design for Gadeokdo airport site work

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has completed its receipt of the basic design for the Gadeokdo New Airport site preparation work, paving the way for detailed design and construction to begin in earnest.

The ministry and the Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Authority said Monday they had received the basic design documents from the Daewoo Engineering consortium, the preliminary candidate for a negotiated contract on the site preparation work, and would move forward with a design review and other follow-up procedures.

The basic design process was launched at a site briefing held by the authority on March 9 and was completed over six months.

The submitted documents will be rigorously reviewed by the Central Construction Technology Review Committee, which will assess compliance with relevant regulations as well as the adequacy of construction methods, equipment and scheduling plans.

Following the design review, the ministry plans to swiftly launch detailed design work and break ground on the priority construction phase before the end of the year.

The ministry said it would begin detailed design immediately upon receiving notification from the Public Procurement Service of a qualified contractor, proceed with the November ground-breaking for the priority construction phase, launch full construction in the first half of next year, and do everything possible to meet a 2035 opening target.
