Event held Saturday at district office multipurpose hall and art gallery under theme 'Bridging Differences, Shining Together'
Commendations, experience booths and campaign activities promote respect across gender and generational lines
Dongdaemun-gu held the "Bridging Differences, Shining Together: 2026 Gender Equality Week Commemorative Event" on Saturday at the multipurpose hall and art gallery on the second floor of the district office, marking Gender Equality Week (Sept. 1–7).
The event was designed to help residents experience the value of gender equality in their daily lives. It featured performances, commendations, lectures and hands-on activities that families could enjoy together.
The morning program opened with a performance by the Dongdaemun District Children's and Youth Choir. The family musical "Change Up" followed, drawing an enthusiastic response from children and family audiences alike.
A commemorative ceremony then recognized individuals and organizations that have contributed to spreading a culture of gender equality, honoring their efforts with formal commendations.
After the ceremony, Professor Lee Ho-seon delivered a keynote lecture on generational differences in thinking and values, offering practical approaches to mutual understanding, respectful communication and healthy conflict resolution in everyday life. The talk drew a strong response from attendees.
Experience booths and a campaign were also held in the art gallery area, broadening participation. More than 600 residents attended in total, taking part in performances, hands-on activities, the campaign and the lecture while reflecting on the meaning of gender equality.
Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min said gender equality begins with small acts of mutual respect within families and in daily life. "I hope this event gave families and generations a chance to understand each other's differences and communicate more openly," he said. He added that the district would continue working to build a culture of gender equality and mutual respect that transcends differences of gender and generation.
