Ajou University said Tuesday that Ahn Jung-hwan, a former national team footballer turned broadcaster, has donated 64 million won ($47,700) to be used for the treatment of children with cancer. Ahn is an alumnus of the university's business administration department, having enrolled in 1994.
Ahn declined any thank-you event or donation ceremony tied to the gift, conveying to the university only his wish that the money go toward treating pediatric cancer patients.
Ahn has been giving back to society through proceeds from his YouTube channel for the past five years. He has donated a total of 436 million won to support children from low-income multicultural families and households headed by grandparents, as well as to cover treatment costs for underprivileged patients. With this donation to Ajou University, Ahn has reached his goal of 500 million won in cumulative donations.
"I have practiced giving in the belief that a person only becomes whole after doing something helpful for others," Ahn said. "I am grateful, rather, to be able to pass on a small warmth that can light up someone's future." He then said, "It means a lot to be able to complete my donation goal at Ajou University, my proud alma mater."
Ajou University President Choi Ki-ju said, "It is meaningful that a proud alumnus who has raised our university's standing on the global stage has personally put the value of sharing into practice as well."
