Ven. Jinwoo, head of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, named Ven. Ingwang as abbot of Woljeongsa Temple, the head temple of the fourth parish, on Tuesday.
Ven. Ingwang received the "sami" precepts, or novice ordination, in 1993 under the guidance of Ven. Jeongnyeom, the former abbot of Woljeongsa Temple. He has since served as superintendent of Sangwonsa Temple and abbot of Gukhyeongsa Temple and Hwaeomseonsa Temple.
The abbot post at Woljeongsa Temple had been vacant since Ven. Jeongnyeom, who had held the position for more than 20 years since 2004, submitted his resignation in July. He stepped down to prepare for a run in the election for head of the order.
"Woljeongsa Temple has carried out many Buddhist projects over a long period and has well-maintained facilities for protecting the temple grounds," Ven. Jinwoo said. "I hope you will continue to lead its work in propagating the dharma and fostering harmony among the congregation, as the temple has done so far."
In response, Ven. Ingwang said, "I will do my best to learn how the order operates, achieve stability and help make this an exemplary parish."
