Marking 27th Social Welfare Day, District Pledges 'Welfare Built Together, Happiness for All in Gangdong'
Gangdong-gu in Seoul held a ceremony Monday to mark the 27th Social Welfare Day, honoring workers who have devoted themselves to social welfare and giving them a chance to recharge.
Social Welfare Day, observed on Sept. 7, was established to commemorate the 1999 enactment of the National Basic Living Security Act. It honors the values of sharing and dedication to one's neighbors while recognizing the hard work of social welfare workers. First held in 2000, this year's observance marks its 27th anniversary.
The event, hosted by Gangdong-gu and organized by the Gangdong-gu Social Welfare Council under the theme "Proud Welfare City Gangdong," was held at Gangdong Children's Hall. About 180 people, including workers from local welfare facilities and organizations and relevant civil servants, attended to reflect on the meaning of social welfare and encourage one another.
The district presented citations to 36 individuals who contributed to improving community welfare, expressing its gratitude. Attendees then recited the social worker's oath, reaffirming their mission and responsibility as welfare workers and renewing their commitment to providing better welfare services.
Meanwhile, a range of cultural performances gave social welfare workers a break from their daily routines. A congratulatory performance by Myureop, a mixed-gender musical group, and a comedy magic show by the Mirinae Magic Troupe added to the festive atmosphere.
Lee Su-hee, Gangdong-gu district mayor, said, "I deeply thank the social welfare workers who serve as a reliable pillar of support for our residents across the district. We will work to create an environment where welfare workers can take pride in their work."
