Moreno to arrive Sunday as Korea's interim football coach

Roberto Moreno, the Spanish coach named interim head coach of South Korea's national football team, will arrive in the country this weekend to begin his role.

The Korea Football Association said Wednesday that Moreno is set to arrive at Incheon International Airport on Sunday morning, where he will hold a standing interview upon arrival.

Then on Monday, he will announce the squad for the national team's upcoming matches in September and October at the Korea Football Park in Cheonan.

The association held a board meeting at the Korea Football Park in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, on Sept. 1 and approved Moreno's appointment as interim head coach.

The men's national football team had been without a head coach since Hong Myung-bo stepped down following South Korea's group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North and Central America.

Rather than naming a permanent head coach, the association opened the interim coaching post to public recruitment for the first time in its history. It sought someone to lead the team through six matches from this month through November. Moreno previously served as assistant coach at Spain's La Liga giant FC Barcelona and as assistant and interim coach for the Spanish national team. He won the post and became the first Spanish coach in the history of Korean football.

Meanwhile, based on the squad Moreno announces Monday, the team will play four matches in September and October.

The team opens with a friendly against Ecuador at Suwon World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. on Sept. 24.

South Korea will then face Uruguay on Sept. 28, Venezuela on Oct. 2 and Uzbekistan on Oct. 6.
