Incheon's Seohae-gu pushes for Cheongna extension of Daejang-Hongdae Line

Seohae-gu, Incheon, is urging the government and related agencies to include the Cheongna extension of the Daejang-Hongdae Line in the national railway network plan. The district cited surging demand for regional transit in areas such as Cheongna International City and Ruwon City.

The Daejang-Hongdae Line serves as a key regional rail axis directly linking the western Greater Seoul area with major districts in Seoul.

Extending the line to Cheongna is expected to significantly improve commuting access to Seoul for Seohae-gu residents while dramatically enhancing overall mobility between the district and surrounding areas.

Cheongna International City and Ruwon City in Seohae-gu have seen a surge in population and traffic as large residential complexes fill up and commercial and office infrastructure continues to expand.

The district determined that its existing urban rail projects alone would not be enough to resolve the mounting traffic congestion expected in the years ahead. It is pursuing the extension project as a preemptive measure to expand the regional transit network.

The district plans to actively make the case for the project's feasibility to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other relevant agencies. It will also continue consultations to have the project included in higher-level plans such as the fifth National Railway Network Plan.

It also plans to strengthen cooperation with local political circles and join forces with neighboring Gyeyang-gu to develop a joint response.

"Given the city's continued growth, expanding the transportation network with a long-term perspective is not an option but a necessity," said Gu Jae-yong, Seohae-gu district mayor. "The Cheongna extension of the Daejang-Hongdae Line is a key task that will take the western Incheon region's transit system to the next level, and we will focus all our administrative resources on ensuring it is ultimately included in the national railway plan."
