Yeongdeungpo Marks Residents' Day With Big Festivities and Bigger Discounts

Yeongdeungpo-gu has prepared a range of celebratory events and generous benefits for residents to mark the 31st Yeongdeungpo District Residents' Day, bringing the community together in celebration and unity.

Sept. 28 marks Residents' Day, commemorating Yeongdeungpo-gu's incorporation into Seoul in 1946. The district has held an annual celebration with residents every year since enacting an ordinance in 1996.

The 31st Residents' Day ceremony will take place Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Yeongdeungpo Art Hall performance venue. About 800 residents from all walks of life are expected to attend.

Announcer Kim Jong-il will emcee the event, which opens with a joint performance combining folk percussion and a traditional dance routine. The performance features the Yeongdeungpo-gu Taekwondo Demonstration Team and the Yeongdeungpo Cultural Center. The program will then feature a screening of a commemorative video, a reading of the residents' charter and a reading of the Constitutional City declaration. It will continue with the appointment of an honorary district mayor and the presentation of residents' awards. The ceremony will close with a congratulatory performance by the district's senior citizens' choir and a group singing of the Residents' Song.

The district will also host a full slate of programs open to residents of every generation during Residents' Day week. On Saturday, the Yeongdeungpo Children and Family Festival — Yeongdeungpo Nolzang — and the Yeongdeungpo Youth Night Market will take place. The Garden Talk Concert & Green Cinema follows Saturday and Sunday, while the Yeongdeungpo Original Beer Festival and the Residents' Singing Contest run Sept. 18-19. A walking race will be held Sept. 20 at the Anyangcheon Sinjeong Bridge athletic track.

The district has also prepared a wide range of benefits tied to everyday life. It will issue 9 billion won ($6.73 million) worth of Yeongdeungpo Love Gift Certificates on Wednesday at 3 p.m. It will also offer 2,000 won discounts each on Lotte Cinema movie tickets and snack combos from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2. It will cut admission fees by 50 percent at the Jureongjureong Zoo's Yeongdeungpo branch from Sept. 14 to 30. It will also provide discounts and extra services at 19 general restaurants from Sept. 14 to 30. In addition, it will offer discounts at 25 beauty salons from Sept. 14 to 20.
