Korea District Heating chief vows to expand sustainable energy projects

Korea District Heating announced Friday it will launch a public solicitation for urban solar power operators in Gyeonggi Province, using idle land across the region.

The initiative aims to boost local economies through a basic energy income for residents and advance carbon neutrality. Eligible applicants are cooperatives or social cooperatives, which will identify idle sites suitable for solar power generation and recruit participating residents. Those residents will establish a special purpose company (SPC) together with Korea District Heating, and any profits generated by the SPC will be shared among participants.

Project recipients will be selected based on a combined assessment of quantitative and qualitative criteria.

"This solicitation is about building a business model that uses idle urban land to expand renewable energy while allowing local residents to participate directly in power generation and share in its profits," Korea District Heating President Ha Dong-geun said. "Korea District Heating will continue to expand sustainable energy projects together with local communities."
