Woman in her 50s bites police officer's finger while trying to stop boyfriend's arrest

A woman in her 50s who clung to her boyfriend to obstruct his arrest and bit a police officer's finger has been sentenced to a suspended prison term.

Chuncheon District Court Judge Ko Beom-jin of Criminal Division 2 sentenced the woman, identified only as A, 55, to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered her to complete 80 hours of community service on Friday. She had been indicted on charges of obstruction of official duties and assault.

According to the indictment, the incident began in Sokcho in March when officers responding to a report of suspected drunk driving asked A's boyfriend, identified as B, to submit to a breathalyzer test.

When B assaulted an officer and was arrested on the spot, A grabbed onto him and tried to prevent the arrest.

As officers attempted to pull her away, A bit one of them on the finger, inflicting a wound requiring about two weeks of treatment.

"The defendant has yet to receive forgiveness from the victim," Judge Ko said in his ruling. "However, the sentence takes into account that she admitted to all charges and has no prior convictions for similar offenses."
