Kumoh National Institute of Technology selected to lead supra-regional talent development project

Gumi city in North Gyeongsang Province announced Monday that Kumoh National Institute of Technology has been selected as the lead university for the Ministry of Education's "Supra-regional Growth Engine Talent Development Project."

The project brings together local governments, universities and companies in a supra-regional consortium to jointly train talent for regional strategic industries, linking education to employment, entrepreneurship, local settlement and technology commercialization.

This year marks the first time the project has been pursued. A total of 19 consortiums from across the country applied, and six models were ultimately selected.

Kumoh National Institute of Technology was chosen as the lead university for the Daegu-North Gyeongsang consortium — organized by North Gyeongsang Province with Daegu's participation — and will spearhead supra-regional talent development in partnership with universities and companies across the two regions.

Through the project, the university plans to invest 60 billion won ($44.8 million) in national funding over four years from 2026 to 2029 to train 3,000 convergence specialists in semiconductor advanced materials, components and equipment, as well as AI manufacturing robotics.

Alongside this, Kumoh National Institute of Technology will also participate in a supra-regional shared university platform centered on five strategic industries: semiconductors, robotics, secondary batteries, mobility and biotech.

The university has long pursued a range of talent development initiatives tied to regional strategic industries, steadily building its capabilities in education and industry-academia cooperation.

"We expect Kumoh National Institute of Technology's selection for this project to serve as an important opportunity to extend the region's education and industrial capabilities across the Daegu-North Gyeongsang area and to jointly cultivate the talent that strategic industries need," Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho said.
