A man in his 30s who directed his anger over financial hardship at a pastor and attempted to kill him has been taken into custody.
Gwangju Bukbu Police Station said Monday it had detained a man identified only as A, in his 30s, on charges of attempted murder for threatening a pastor at his former church with a weapon.
A is accused of threatening to stab Pastor B, a man in his 70s, with a bladed weapon at a church in Buk-gu, Gwangju, at around 8 p.m. Saturday.
A did not actually swing the weapon, leaving B uninjured, but fled the scene immediately after the incident and was later apprehended by police.
A, who works in the transportation industry, reportedly told investigators that he had lived his life according to B's sermons but his financial situation had not improved.
Police upgraded the charges from aggravated intimidation to attempted murder after determining that A had premeditated the attack, citing evidence that he had purchased the weapon in advance.
