Dongdaemun-gu Marks 51st Anniversary of Civil Defense Corps With 325 Members Pledging Community Safety

Dongdaemun-gu held a ceremony Monday at the multipurpose hall on the second floor of the district office to mark the 51st anniversary of the founding of the civil defense corps.

The civil defense corps was established on Sept. 22, 1975, under the Framework Act on Civil Defense and marks its 51st year this year. The event was organized to boost the pride of civil defense members, recognize the dedication of those who have contributed to community safety, and reflect on the corps' history and vital role.

The event was divided into two parts: a commemorative ceremony and a special training session for civil defense leaders. A total of 325 district and workplace civil defense leaders from across Dongdaemun-gu attended.

The first part featured remarks by the district mayor reflecting on the corps' 51 years of service, followed by a screening of a commemorative video tracing its history. Members then recited the civil defense creed, reaffirming their sense of mission. Fifteen district civil defense leaders who have contributed to the advancement of civil defense operations were also presented with commendations in recognition of their dedication to community safety.

The second part offered capacity-building sessions for civil defense leaders, covering general competency and first-aid training to strengthen practical and professional civil defense skills.

Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min said the civil defense corps has served as a central pillar of national and local safety over the past half-century. "I ask that the civil defense corps continue to be an active bulwark that protects our neighborhoods and workplaces," he said.

Dongdaemun-gu plans to continue working closely with the civil defense corps to build a community where all residents can feel safe.
