Anti-prostitution week runs Sept. 19–25
The Korean National Police Agency held a special lecture and field forum to deepen understanding of prostitution-related crimes and strengthen enforcement capacity, marking the agency's "Anti-Prostitution Week" running Sept. 19–25.
The lecture, themed "Understanding Prostitution Crimes and Building Capacity," was attended by Jo Ju-eun, the agency's director for women's safety and school violence policy, along with officials from enforcement and investigation units. Hwang Geum-myeong-ryun, head of the civic group Gender Justice Action, delivered the lecture, emphasizing the gendered violence inherent in prostitution crimes and calling on police to adopt a victim-centered approach.
At the forum that followed, agency officials and frontline officers discussed problems arising during prostitution crackdowns and investigations. The agency shared feedback gathered from civic groups and related government bodies, and listened to the difficulties frontline vice investigation teams face in handling such cases.
"This lecture and forum are an opportunity to deepen our understanding of prostitution crimes and the characteristics of victims, while at the same time hearing directly from officers who handle these cases in practice," Jo said. "We plan to improve police understanding of prostitution crimes and victim characteristics, and to reform our enforcement and investigation systems to be more victim-centered."
