County honored in national local government category at 2026 Reading Korea ceremony
Yeoncheon-gun announced Wednesday that it received the 11th Korea Reading Local Government Award in the national local government category at the 2026 Reading Korea ceremony, held at Myongji University.
The ceremony is sponsored by the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee and organized by the Korea National Reading Culture Promotion Association. It recognizes outstanding institutions and individuals that have led efforts to promote reading culture and strengthen reading competitiveness.
Yeoncheon-gun has pursued a range of reading culture promotion projects under the vision "Into the Future with Books — YES, Yeoncheon!"
Key initiatives have included a monthly humanities program called "Daldali Inmunhak," a "One City, One Book" campaign, a reading marathon and support for reading clubs. The county has also partnered with military units to run a civilian-government-military cooperative reading education program and has supported base libraries, working to build a reading ecosystem suited to the region's character.
To advance its goal of becoming a sustainable reading city, Yeoncheon-gun launched the YES Yeoncheon Reading College program in earnest this month.
The program is designed to broaden residents' grounding in the humanities and support deeper reading engagement, and is expected to help expand the base of reading culture across the county.
Lee Mi-jeong, director of the Yeoncheon-gun Unification and Lifelong Education Center, said the award was the result of the combined efforts of residents and staff. "Going forward, we will continue to develop substantive reading policies so that local libraries can become multifaceted cultural spaces for community communication and residents can enjoy the pleasure of reading in their daily lives," she said.
