7 elementary students fall into Hantan River in Gyeonggi; 1 found in cardiac arrest after going missing

Seven elementary school students fell into the Hantan River in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province, on Wednesday. Six managed to get out of the water on their own, while one went missing and was later found in cardiac arrest.

According to Yonhap, a report came in at around 3:08 p.m. Wednesday saying children appeared to have fallen into the Hantan River in Jeongok-eup, Yeoncheon-gun.

Six of the students got out of the water on their own, but a sixth-grade boy identified only by his surname went missing.

Fire department authorities dispatched water rescue teams and drones to search the area. At around 4:45 p.m., divers found the boy in cardiac arrest and transported him to a hospital.

The students, all classmates at the same elementary school, are believed to have fallen in while swimming in the river after school.

The six students who escaped on their own had no injuries and were handed over to their guardians.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the circumstances of the accident by questioning witnesses and others present.
