Seoul's Seongbuk-gu held a joint public-private-university energy efficiency campaign Wednesday near the district office and along Hanaro Street near Sungshin Women's University.
The campaign was organized ahead of the Chuseok holiday, when energy consumption typically surges, to build public awareness of the climate crisis and encourage residents to adopt more efficient energy habits in their daily lives. The slogan "Seongbuk-e Banhada" carries a double meaning — "cut energy in half" and "fall in love with Seongbuk-gu."
The event was notable for bringing together two key groups: a university student climate monitoring team drawn from Kookmin University, Seokyeong University and Hansung University, and a carbon neutrality action corps made up of community leaders from each neighborhood. Together, they worked to spread a "2050 Seongbuk-style carbon neutrality culture" across the district.
About 100 people attended, including the district's carbon neutrality implementation officer. Divided into six teams, participants marched through the streets carrying promotional placards and wearing sashes, drawing the attention of passersby. They also promoted enrollment in the Eco-Mileage program and distributed a "One Person, One Ton of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Checklist" to help residents take concrete steps toward carbon neutrality in everyday life.
"Given the severity of climate disasters occurring with increasing frequency around the world, efficient energy use in daily life and residents' active participation are just as important as government-level policy," District Mayor Lee Seung-ro said. "We will continue to work closely with the university student monitoring team and the carbon neutrality action corps to pursue a wide range of carbon neutrality projects grounded in the voluntary participation of climate-conscious citizens."
