Firm signs data center development cooperation MOU with Samsung Powertech, Smart E and Gridwiz
Kolon Global is stepping up its push into data center development as a future growth engine, responding to rapidly expanding demand in the AI and cloud markets.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding on new data center development cooperation with Samsung Powertech, Smart E and Gridwiz on Monday at Gridwiz's Yangjae office in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
The signing ceremony was attended by Ryu Hyeon-jun, head of Kolon Global's asset management division, along with Lee Tae-sik, executive vice president of Samsung Powertech; Lim Seok-woo, CEO of Smart E; and Ryu Jun-woo, president of Gridwiz.
The agreement is designed to get ahead of increasingly complex data center engineering demands — including high-density server installations, large-scale power supply and advanced cooling systems — driven by the accelerating adoption of AI.
Kolon Global plans to combine the capabilities of its high-tech division, which specializes in structural design for heavy loads and customized power and cooling engineering, with those of its asset management division, which brings facility operation and management expertise. Together, the company aims to offer an end-to-end data center solution covering engineering, procurement and construction, as well as ongoing operations and maintenance.
The four companies will establish a standing consultative body to coordinate private-sector cooperation across the entire data center development process. Kolon Global will oversee overall engineering, procurement and construction; Gridwiz will handle integrated power and energy management systems and investment attraction; Samsung Powertech will take charge of site development and the manufacture of key power equipment; and Smart E will provide specialized development and consulting services.
"Data centers are a complex development domain that requires a combination of advanced construction technology and stable power infrastructure," a Kolon Global official said. "We will draw on the engineering capabilities of our high-tech division and the operational experience of our asset management division to deliver tangible business results together with our specialist partners."
Meanwhile, Kolon Global posted consolidated sales of 750.5 billion won ($542 million) in the second quarter of this year, along with operating profit of 52.2 billion won and net profit for the period of 32.3 billion won. Sales rose 2.2 percent year on year, while operating profit surged 173.6 percent. Net profit for the period swung back to positive.
