Daegu to mark Chuseok holiday with exhibitions, performances and cultural events

Daegu city announced Tuesday that it has prepared a range of cultural events for the Chuseok holiday, giving residents, returning visitors and tourists opportunities to enjoy exhibitions, performances and hands-on experiences across the city.

This year's holiday lineup brings together works by masters from both East and West — from Joseon-era painter Jeong Seon to Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall and Francisco Goya — all within a single city.

At the Daegu Gansong Art Museum, a special exhibition marks the 350th anniversary of the birth of Jeong Seon, the celebrated landscape painter known by his pen name Gyeomjae.

The show brings together more than 200 works and artifacts from the collections of the Gansong Art and Culture Foundation, the Samsung Culture Foundation, the National Museum of Korea and various other institutions and private collectors, and is expected to draw large crowds throughout the holiday.

The Daegu Culture and Arts Center will present works by pop art pioneer Andy Warhol alongside a special exhibition tied to the Daegu Photo Biennale, while the Daegu Art Factory offers a close look at the distinctive artistic world of Marc Chagall, a master of 20th-century graphic art.

The Daegu Art Museum rounds out the exhibition offerings with several shows, including a permanent display tracing the development of modern Daegu painting from the 1920s through the 1960s, a special 15th-anniversary collection exhibition featuring Francisco Goya's prints under the title "I Saw It," and "Sim Yun: Gray Theater."

Autumn performances will also be on offer. On Saturday, the crossover vocal ensemble Fortis — known for powerful voices and melodic harmonies — will perform a Saturday Citizens Concert at 28 Art Square on Dongseong-ro.

Families can take part in traditional cultural activities for the holiday as well. The Gyesan Yega area will host folk experience programs including jegi-chagi (a traditional Korean shuttlecock game), rope-twisting and hanbok dress-up, while the Hyangchon Cultural Center will run traditional games such as ddakji (a paper-flipping game) and tuho (arrow-throwing) for all ages.

Daegu Children's World will hold a Chuseok festival called "Kkumbit Hangawi" from Thursday through Sunday, with the exception of Chuseok day itself, featuring traditional games and other activities. On Saturday, children can also take part in a persimmon-picking experience and other programs.

For those looking to explore the city, a stamp-rally travel program titled "Autumn Trip to Daegu: Stamp Road 20" will run through Oct. 18 via the Cashwalk app's team feature.

Tourist information centers at Daegu Airport, Dongdaegu Station, Dongseong-ro and E-World will operate on their regular schedules throughout the holiday.

City tour buses will run on both the downtown circular route and themed routes on all days except Chuseok day itself. On Saturday, a special "Contemplative Journey" route will depart from Dongdaegu Station and visit Donghwasa Temple, Sayuwon and Hwabonnyeok Station.

"We have prepared a wide range of programs so that people can enjoy high-quality culture and arts throughout Daegu and discover new charms of the city this Chuseok," said Hwangbo Ran, director of Daegu's culture, sports and tourism bureau. "We hope everyone has a relaxed and enjoyable holiday filled with rich cultural experiences."
