South Korea's Hwang Jung-mi faces North Korea's Ri Jin-mi in quarterfinals at Nagoya Asian Games

South Korean soft tennis prospect Hwang Jung-mi, 19, of NH NongHyup Bank will face North Korea's Ri Jin-mi, 24, in a high-stakes inter-Korean quarterfinal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games women's singles event.

Hwang delivered a flawless performance Tuesday at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya, sweeping past Suwanan Haknolat of Laos and Chatcha Klomkamon of Thailand 4-0 in both matches without dropping a single game to finish atop Group H.

Her quarterfinal opponent will be Ri Jin-mi, who topped Group G. The two players meet Wednesday at 9 a.m. with a semifinal berth on the line.

The winner is guaranteed a podium finish. Soft tennis at the Asian Games does not hold a third-place match — both semifinal losers receive bronze medals — meaning the victor of Wednesday's quarterfinal will secure at least a bronze.

Meanwhile, Lee Su-jin of Okcheon-gun Office also went unbeaten through Group B to advance to the quarterfinals as the group winner. She will face Japan's Denma Rena, who topped Group A, in a South Korea-Japan showdown for a semifinal spot.

In the men's singles draw, Lee Ha-neul of Suncheon City Hall swept through the group stage with two straight wins to reach the quarterfinals, where he will take on Taiwan's Zhan Bo-yi for a place in the semifinals.
