Hwang Sun-woo advances to 200m freestyle final, chases back-to-back AG gold

South Korea's top swimmer Hwang Sun-woo cruised into the men's 200m freestyle final at the Asian Games on Wednesday.

Hwang clocked 1 minute 47.97 seconds at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games swimming heats at Tokyo Aquatics Centre, finishing second overall to advance to the final.

The defending champion from the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, Hwang will compete in the final at the same venue at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday, seeking a second consecutive gold medal in the event.

Japan's Murase Tatsuya topped the heats with a time of 1:47.60, while compatriot Kuroda Kazusa finished third at 1:48.57, just behind Hwang.

Hwang won gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Games with a time of 1:44.40 and later set an Asian record of 1:43.92 at last year's National Sports Festival.

Kim Woo-min, South Korea's top middle- and long-distance swimmer, withdrew from the men's 200m freestyle after sustaining a shoulder injury ahead of these Games and did not compete in Wednesday's heats.

Kim had originally been entered in the men's 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events, as well as the 4x400m and 4x800m freestyle relays.

Kim contributed to a bronze medal in the men's 4x800m freestyle relay but posted a disappointing time of 15:16.52 to finish eighth in the men's 1500m freestyle on Tuesday. He subsequently revealed he had been diagnosed with a partial tear of the left shoulder's rotator cuff and labrum.

Kim is expected to push through and compete in the men's 400m freestyle — his signature event, where he is also seeking back-to-back Asian Games gold — though he is consulting with medical staff over whether to enter the 800m freestyle. The 800m is scheduled for Thursday, and the 400m for Friday.
