Na Kyung-won slams police over dashcam video showing road attack in Icheon

Dashcam footage showing a vehicle blocking another car and its occupants rushing toward the driver on a quiet road in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, has gone public, stirring controversy. People Power Party lawmaker Na Kyung-won, who shared the video, criticized the police response and urged a full investigation and strict disciplinary action.

Na shared the video on SNS on Monday, after the YouTube channel Han Moon-chul TV recently featured the Icheon road attack incident.

The footage shows a driver identified as A being suddenly chased and threatened by another vehicle while traveling on the road.

A's car had initially been parked facing the wrong direction on the road's shoulder. After A finished talking with an acquaintance and drove off, a vehicle driven by B abruptly changed direction and began following A. When B's car drew close, A pulled over to let it pass — but B's vehicle instead cut in front of A's car, and its occupants got out and rushed toward A.

Feeling threatened, A immediately drove away from the scene.

A said of the incident that "two unidentified foreigners rolled down their window, said something, then suddenly smirked, blocked the road and jumped out." A added that "the driver of the attacking vehicle ran up and kicked the hood of my car, while the passenger came toward me holding what appeared to be a weapon in one hand, as if about to strike down."

However, the nationality of B and the others, and whether they were actually carrying a weapon, cannot be confirmed from the footage that has been made public.

A filed a police report and an investigation was opened, but police were reportedly unable to identify the suspects and suspended the case after roughly 50 days.

Na said that when A reported being chased and threatened by men believed to be foreigners, "the police response was apparently to tell them to give up because the offending vehicle could not be found," adding, "Have they given up on being police? This is a serious dereliction of duty."

Na then said, "How did public safety in our country come to this? It is a foreseeable disaster brought on by the Lee Jae Myung Democratic Party government's push to dismantle the prosecution, completely abolish supplementary investigative powers, and gut the national investigation system." Na warned that "the entire country is descending into a lawless 'The Outlaws' state where criminals roam the streets freely."

Na went on to say, "While police gave up on catching the perpetrators without even properly checking CCTV footage or conducting door-to-door inquiries, these individuals may be targeting more innocent citizens." Na urged authorities to "mobilize every available investigative resource and issue a nationwide wanted notice to ensure the perpetrators are caught and severely punished."

Na also said "there is no reason for state authority to exist if it cannot protect the lives and safety of the people," and called for a full investigation and strong disciplinary measures against the officers who abandoned the case.
