Cluster-amaryllis flowers are in full bloom along the Pine Breeze Trail leading to Unmunsa Temple in Cheongdo-gun, North Gyeongsang Province, drawing a steady stream of tourists eager to soak in the colors of autumn, local officials said Thursday.
The crimson flowers carpet roughly 16,500 square meters of the trail. Known in Korean as "sangsahwa," or the flower of longing, the cluster-amaryllis blooms after its leaves have fallen — a distinctive ecological trait that has made it a symbol of bittersweet, yearning love.
Cheongdo-gun Mayor Park Gwon-hyeon said the natural scenery around Unmunsa is beautiful in every season, "but particularly when the cluster-amaryllis blooms at this time of year, its beauty reaches its peak."
