Donald Trump has agreed to a one-on-one meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Axios reported Sunday (local time), citing multiple sources, raising hopes for a thaw in the strained relationship between the administration and the AI company.
Trump personally invited Amodei to a private dinner at the White House, Axios said.
Sources said Trump extended the invitation after Amodei was unable to attend a state dinner held Thursday for Chinese President Xi Jinping due to a scheduling conflict. The dinner is also set to take place ahead of a broader meeting Tuesday at the White House, where Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are scheduled to meet with top AI company CEOs.
The dinner will mark the first time the two have met one-on-one, and is being read as a signal that tensions between the US government and Anthropic may be easing.
The Ministry of National Defense had previously designated Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" company — a label typically reserved for firms linked to adversarial nations — while the Commerce Department at one point imposed export control guidelines on Anthropic products including Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5, temporarily suspending those services.
More recently, Trump sharply criticized Amodei's calls for slowing the pace of AI development, calling the idea a "scam" that would only benefit China. Months earlier, the White House had reportedly rebuffed Anthropic's request for a private meeting with Trump, with aides said to have dismissed Amodei as "too quirky" for the president to deal with.
Given the administration's well-known sensitivity to Trump's personal relationships and preferences, a one-on-one meeting with the president is seen by companies as an invaluable opportunity, Axios noted.
A White House official said in connection with the meeting: "As President Trump has made clear, America will lead the world in superintelligence while protecting American consumers. We will drive innovation, strengthen American competitiveness, and ensure this transformative technology works for the American people."
