Registration open Oct. 1–18; program runs Oct. 19–Nov. 18
Dongducheon is launching a "Fun Fun Neighborhood Walking" program as part of its obesity prevention and management initiative, aiming to encourage residents to walk regularly and build healthier lifestyle habits.
Registration opens Thursday and runs through Oct. 18, with the program itself running from Oct. 19 to Nov. 18 — roughly one month. The city will accept the first 200 smartphone users who sign up, doubling the previous cap of 100 participants in response to strong interest and high satisfaction scores from last year's program.
Participants will use a mobile walking app called "Modu's Runner" to track their daily step counts and activity levels, helping them maintain consistent physical activity in their everyday lives.
Daily step goals are set by age: participants under 65 must reach at least 8,000 steps, while those 65 and older must reach at least 7,000. Anyone who meets their target throughout the program period will receive a 10,000-won ($7) Onnuri gift voucher as an incentive to stay motivated and keep walking.
Last year's edition filled all 100 available spots and earned high marks in a participant satisfaction survey. Building on that response, the Dongducheon Public Health Center is expanding the program this year so more residents can use walking as a path to healthier living.
Yang Ung-sik, head of the health center's health promotion division, said the strong turnout last year prompted the city to raise the cap to 200 this year. "We hope this becomes an opportunity for residents to consistently practice walking in their daily lives and develop healthy lifestyle habits," he said. "We will continue to pursue a variety of health promotion projects to boost physical activity among our citizens."
