Body of infant boy found at wastewater treatment plant in Asan; police to seek autopsy

Police have launched an investigation after the body of an infant boy was discovered at a wastewater treatment facility in Tangjeong-myeon, Asan, South Chungcheong Province.

According to the Asan Fire Department and Asan Police Station, the in-house fire brigade at a Samsung Display plant in Tangjeong-myeon called emergency services at around 11:30 p.m. Monday, saying it had found an object that was difficult to identify as either an animal or a human body.

Firefighters who responded to the scene found the body of an infant boy — measuring 20 centimeters in length and weighing 110 grams — at a solids-filtering section of the facility's collection tank, and handed it over to police.

"We have not yet been able to determine whether this was a miscarriage or a stillbirth," police said, adding that they plan to apply for a seizure warrant and request an autopsy and DNA analysis on Wednesday.
