Korea Zinc's Onsan smelter joins public-private environmental cleanup at national industrial complex

Korea Zinc's Onsan smelter has joined a public-private environmental cleanup drive at the Onsan National Industrial Complex in Ulsan, working alongside the city government and related agencies to improve conditions at the site.

The smelter announced Wednesday that it participated in the "2026 Third-Quarter National Industrial Complex Environmental Cleanup" on Tuesday alongside Ulsan city and the Korea Industrial Complex Corp.'s Ulsan regional office. The activity took place around the Korea Zinc intersection inside the Onsan National Industrial Complex in Ulju-gun, Ulsan.

The cleanup is part of Ulsan city's "Livable City Clean-Up Ulsan" initiative, which brings together government agencies, industrial complex management bodies and tenant companies to improve the environment at industrial sites and foster a culture of voluntary environmental stewardship. The program has been running since last year.

About 40 people took part, including employees of Korea Zinc's Onsan smelter and officials from Ulsan city and the Korea Industrial Complex Corp.'s Ulsan regional office.

Participants cleaned up roadsides, sidewalks, parking lots and green spaces around the Korea Zinc intersection within the complex. They focused particularly on collecting discarded waste materials, cigarette butts, plastics and other refuse left along roads and in green areas, pooling their efforts to improve the complex's overall appearance.

"The Onsan National Industrial Complex is an important industrial site where Korea Zinc and many other companies and workers operate together," a Korea Zinc official said. "We are honored to contribute to creating a pleasant environment alongside the local community and related organizations, and we will continue to work closely with the community to take part in a wide range of local cooperation activities, including improving the environment around our facilities."

Meanwhile, Korea Zinc has also been stepping up its eco-friendly management efforts. The company recently formed a strategic partnership and signed a contract to receive 11 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually from solar power plants operating in Gangwon Province, Gyeonggi Province and North Gyeongsang Province through Hanwha Shinhan Terawatt Hour, as part of its push to expand its green energy business.
